New house news

Our house at White Cedars, a development by Tim Schaeffer

We moved into our new house on Friday, May 20th 2005. Located in the Cedar Brook area of Winslow Township, New Jersey, it was twelve months in waiting and five months in the making but ultimately worth the wait.

We have 10.5 acres, the vast majority of which is protected wooded wetland. Various maps indicate we might have a small stream flowing in the woods, but we've not been able to get back there yet to see if it's any more than a damp puddle!

A future new neighbor of ours stopped by to say they had found this collection of pictures online and that it gave them some hope that their own house would be completed soon! If any other current or future White Cedars residents discover this site, please feel free to drop me an email at chrisy@flirble.org to say hi!

We're on the maps at last! As of early June, 2005, about a third of the roads that form the White Cedars development have appeared on NavTech-driven maps (such as MapQuest). This means DeSilvio Drive is mappable at last, hooray!

There was an article in a local newspaper, the Courier-Post, about White Cedars. Read it here.

End Result

20050611: The front

The finished front of the house.

Settlement day

20050520: Moving in...

We moved in! Yay! It was a very wet Friday, but that didn't stop us...

The last week

20050518: Stairs are stained, grass is down at the front

Stairs are even polished! Sod is down, some shrubs planted to make it look nice.

20050517: Almost there...

20050516: Landscapers arrive, gutter goes up

The lawn is being prepared for sod. The gutters are being installed.

One week to go...

20050513: Sidewalk and plumbing

Sidewalk has been laid, plumbers are back and doing their thing. The stairs at the rear are finished, Cat5 is all terminated.

20050512: Driveway and carpets

Driveway has been laid, stairs at the back of the house are being worked on, carpet is being laid.

Cabinets and dirt and electrics

20050511: Cat5 guy is back

The guy doing my data cabling is back, should finish tomorrow. Landings for the back doors are being constructed (they even have proper footings). We have a real front door lock and also have our street number and garage doors.

20050510: Electrical done!

Electrics are 99.9% complete, some wood trim work going on today. Heating/cooling seems comissioned, bar the hookup to the Gas supply. The stain on the hand rails looks nice. I imagine they do the stairs themselves pretty much as a the last thing.

20050506: Electrical stuff

Electricians are back wiring in outlets and switches. Garage floor gets concreted, as does the front door step.

20050505: Kitchen cabinets and back yard dirt

Cabinets going in. We chose the cheapest with a view to replacing later, but as it turns out they don't look as terrible as we might have expected. Topsoil has been spread out at the back. Plus, Gas meter is in and the garage and front door step are framed and ready for concrete.

Paint and Tile and Handrails and wooden flooring

20050504: Doors have locks

Hardwood flooring is complete and the bathroom tile is done (very nice!). Fireplace has a slate surround.

20050503: Wooden floor

The hardwood floor looks ace! Guest bathroom is grouted, master bathroom coming along nicely.

20050502: Handrails and tile

Garage pier fixed, handrails mostly fitted, bathroom floor tiling done.

20050429: Painting begins

Spray-painting the interior. The whole house will be painted white. Plus, the support pier in the Garage has been concreted.

Doors and things

20050428: Garage pier almost fixed

Pier ready to be filled with concrete, carpenters seem almost done, attic has been filled with loose insulation.

20050427: More doors

Doors, wooden trim, window sills, baseboards and such. The outside door to the basement goes in, as does the attic access ladder.

20050426: Doors and trim and stuff

Doors are being mounted, window sills fitted. The rafter and soffit trim is done. Last section of floor completed in basement.

20050425: Small things

A collection of random things, including the electric meter and the ground rod.

Drywall

20050422: Drywall complete

Drywall seems to be done and they have delivered the doors for inside the house.

20050414: Drywall goes up

Installation of the drywall.

20050413: Drywall delivery

They have delivered a ton of drywall - to the rooms it's for too! Passed the insulation inspection today also.

Siding

20050412: Insulation inspection fails

Siding complete, failed the insulation inspection, the garage frame gets temporary supports and will be re-cast with rebar later.

20050411: Siding almost done

Siding is almost complete, boiler is delivered to basement.

20050410: Siding

Siding is half way there, which is very cool since we didn't expect them to start this on a Sunday! Plus, the Tyvek that went into hiding seems to have reappeared and is being used on the walls. Look closely at IMG_1447, the bottom of the support pier is broken!

Exterior wall insulation

20050409: Insulation complete

Outside walls are all insulated now, plus they got around to putting in my basement-to-attic PVC tube (for future cabling projects!) Also, the Tyvek that was delivered yesterday seems to have vanished. Need to investigate this.

20050408: Insulation starts

They start insulating the exterior walls and the roof of the sunroom/family room. Siding delivery, basement is flooded from heavy rain.

Basement floor

20050407: Frame inspection passed!

Had an official walk through, brick work complete, nook door is in, loft access relocated.

20050406: Framing inspection tomorrow

Side windows go in at last, basement stairs arrive, framing inspection tomorrow plus an official walkthrough before they put up drywall.

20050405: Basement floor

The floor of the basement has been laid at last, the window in the master bathroom has been centred (yay!) and other small things. Work mostly on hold while everyone waits for the concrete in the basement to set.

Bricks!

20050404: Bricks

Last leg of the brickwork starts, electricians say they're almost done and word is that the basement floor will be concreted tomorrow. They're digging a drain for the basement outside entrance, too.

20050403: Rain

Some carpentry over the weekend, but it's otherwise just very wet.

20050401: The sun is shining...

There's a lot o' electric cables going in!

20050331: Water is on!

Plumbing has been tested, one flank of brickwork is complete and the Electrics have started.

20050330: Brickwork

Bricks get laid! Tubs arrive!

20050329: Brick delivery

And the stairs get installed.

Work progresses

20050325: Doors!

More windows, some doors, some vents.

20050324: Windows!

Windows are going in, plus most of the heating work is done.

20050321: Foyer window arch, cleanup

They've removed the temporary supports, made the window opening arch and a bunch of other bits.

20050318: Basement, roof vents

Getting ready for the basement floor, two vents through the roof.

Roof is done, two months to go!

20050317: Roof is done

Roofing is finished.

20050316: Roofing shingle!

Roofing, water and sewer and a windows and doors delivery.

20050314: Markup, trench, hole-in-roof

Markup for the exterior finish, trench for water and sewer, flashing on the window sills plus a random hole appears in our almost-a-roof!

Sheeting

20050313: Sheeting finished

And a peek inside.

20050312: Sheeting begins in ernest

It begins to look like a house.

20050309: Bedroom window arch

Apparently the house is ready to be sheeted! Hope they start soon...

20050307: Roofy bits, wooden panels

Some wooden panels make it onto the front of the house on this unusually warm and sunny day!

The roof!

20050304: Foyer, Sunroom roofing

The family room gets its rear wall!

20050303: The bedroom closet roof

And other small roof things.

20050302: More roof work, upstairs

Various work going on with the roof plus a sneak peek of the upstairs!

20050228: The roof!

The roof is started just ahead of a major snowstorm.

More snow...

20050225: Window arches, panelling

They were meant to have started the trusses by now, but can't because of the snow. And there's another storm coming!

20050224: More bloody snow...

*sigh*

The 2nd floor

20050223: Upstairs framing

The upstairs now has some framework.

20050222: Upstairs flooring

The upstairs has its floor. Progress slows a little due to snow.

20050218: The 2nd floor supports

Carpentry has begun...

20050217: Walls walls walls...

We have some walls.

20050216: First Floor

The floor has been laid for the first (ground) floor.

20050212: Virtual floor

Enough of the ground floor has gone in for them to position the support columns, ready to fill the concrete for the basement floor.

20050211: Carpentry!

They have begun wood working on the house.

Bring on the concrete.

20050210: Some concrete

There's some concrete in the hole that was in the garage. Note the grade of the slope at the side of the house.

20050208: Dirt movement

The land has been roughly graded and the crevice that surrounded the walls filled and compressed.

20050205: The Basement walls and windows

The Basement now has walls and windows. In particular, the rear entrance to the basement is quite clear now.

20050129: Basement wall frames.

They've finally framed the walls. We've had some severe snow in Southern Jersey of late, about two feet in Winslow, which slowed everything down. Soon, they'll insert some iron reinforcment bars and then fill these metal frames with concrete.

We have construction action!

20050115: Getting ready to frame the basement walls

They're stockpiling these metal panels which they will use to frame the basement walls.

20050113: Concrete footings

These footings are the foundation of the house.

2005012: Work has begun!

Wednesday January 12th, 2005, the contractors finally broke ground!
